The Politics major at Earlham is designed to provide both a strong foundation in the discipline and the flexibility to pursue focused areas of interest. Students begin with a core curriculum that introduces the central fields of political study—American politics, international affairs, and political theory—while also developing essential skills in writing, research, and analytical reasoning.
Building on this foundation, students complete additional coursework within one of three concentrations: Institutions and Governance, Public Policy, or International Affairs. This structure allows students to deepen their knowledge in a particular area while maintaining a broad understanding of political systems and ideas.
Graduates of the Politics program pursue a wide range of paths, including careers in government, public policy, law, education, and international affairs. The major also provides a strong foundation for graduate study in fields such as public policy, public administration, international relations, urban planning, and law.
Through the combination of core requirements and track-based electives, students develop the ability to analyze complex political issues, evaluate evidence, and communicate their ideas clearly and effectively—skills that are essential for success in both professional and academic settings.
Bachelor of Arts in Politics (37 credits)
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, students must complete seven core courses and five additional courses within one of three concentrations:
- Institutions and Governance
- Public Policy
- International Affairs
At least 15 of the required credits must be at the 300 or 400 level, including the senior capstone.

To earn a minor in politics, you must complete a minimum of five courses (16 credits), including at least one at the 300 level.
