Two degrees in four years
Earlham College offers a distinctive 3+1 education program where you can earn both a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree within nine semesters, to be completed in four years.
You’ll major in art, biology, chemistry, english, French, earth and environmental science, history, math, music, physics, politics or Spanish as an undergraduate and become licensed to teach grades 5-12 in your area.

Requirements
- You must complete your major and all general education requirements by the end of your junior year.
- You must earn 102 (of the regularly required 120) undergraduate credits. 18 M.A.T. credits will apply toward both the B.A. and the M.A.T.
- You must earn at least 26 of the required 36 upper-level credits by the end of your junior year. Ten of the 18 M.A.T. credits applied toward the undergraduate degree will fulfill the remaining 10 upper-level credits required.
- You must have a grade point of 3.0 or higher at the end of the fall semester of your junior year in order to be eligible for the 3+1 Program.
- You must take the practice Praxis exam for teacher educators for your major, which is the area you intend to teach. Departments may choose to accept a passing score on this exam as part of the student’s comprehensive examination.
Completing your fourth year
- You will be billed at the lower tuition rate for the M.A.T. (currently $29,000 for three semesters compared to $53,010 for two semesters).
- You will be considered a graduate student and are therefore eligible to live off campus, thus saving on the cost of room and board.
- You will not be eligible for undergraduate financial aid for this year.
- You must fill out your FAFSA as an independent student (instead of having parents complete the FAFSA). You will receive financial aid as a graduate student, including Stafford loans, which can cover both tuition and living expenses. There are also limited scholarships offered through the Earlham College Graduate Programs in Education.
- You will be eligible to participate in co-curricular activities, including athletic teams. (Students doing a 4+1 have always been eligible to participate in co-curricular activities including athletic teams if they have a year of eligibility left.)
